After much reports and pix of the three cruise ship piers all blown to
pieces by hurricane Wilma, it was reported that reps of Carnival (who
owns practically all the other cruise lines now) met with reps in
Cozumel
and announced that the port will be open to cruise ships on Nov 14.
Everyone was skeptical of that announced date, but it appears true.
The cruiseship piers will not be sufficiently well repaired for cruise
ships to dock, but apparently Cozumel is ready to accept cruise ship
passengers who come ashore on tenders.
I am on a back-to-back cruise on the same ship, the Star Princess,
which are supposed to have the same itinerary. But I learned from
the cruise ship patter this morning that TWO of the ports of call will
be different.
We'll be stopping at Cozumel and Montego Bay, instread of last
week's Majahual (Costa Maya) and Ocho Rio.
I am really looking forward to the stop at Coz after a day at sea, to
assess first hand the prospects of future travel and diving in Cozumel.

Just thinking about the anchor damage...

If the cruise ships are anchored, they will most likely do so in the
part of the channel nobody dives, nor will they affect any of the
diving in Cozumel.

I'm thinking of Christmas '99 when the cruise dock (at that time) was
full, and four more ships were using tenders at anchor - one on top of
Paradise Reef. Though it's healed somewhat, I still see the big hole it
left behind.
