Does anyone have recent experience with this liveaboard? How many
dives does it really offer each day? Looking for comments

SS Thorrfin
Yes, me and my wife had ten nights on board in 03 (i think it was 03), the
diving is awesome, its deep in places as well as dark, if you have camera
you will need lights for video and wide angle for stills. There are
mandatory 3 or 4 deco stops on each ascent. The guides ( i remember Kent
as being very good) know their way around incredibly well, they can drop a
line from the tender to the bow or the stern of the wreck when i could'nt
even see the wreck........there is little or no current to speak of so not
prolific in fish life. You do penetrate the wrecks so again you need good
torches, not ones with multiple batteries like dive center torches, good
recharchable i reccomend. Or HID......
The boat is very stable, it does not move about in "rough" seas, i dont

How rough does the water get inside the lagoon? When I went, it was like
diving in a lake.

mean really rough......i just mean that it is stable and you should'nt
feel "sea sick" if your prone to that. There are 5 - 6 dives available
daily, we did'nt do that many, you do dive on singles unless you want
twins which i think i saw some available, they may have been the captains
or Dan's the divemaster. Nitrox is available. There is a jaquizzi on the
back deck which is great for after a dive, and a sun deck on the top deck,
dont forget to do a tour of the engine room, this is great to watch as the

Well, i've said before somewhere, they stand their tank's upright and
unsupported, and i did'nt see any falling over so i would say the boat is
"very" stable.....no rock and roll.....
How rough......again, quite rough when in the tender, on some trips back
to Thorrfin we had to wear our diving mask's because of the spray and
rain. Lets say it gets choppy rather than rough.

That must be it. On the Odyssey, you don't dive from a tender so there's no
need to get spray in your face. In fact, the Odyssey even prevented the

What was the jaquizi like on the Odyssey ????
Greg Mossman...

Jacuzzis are detrimental to divers' health. Obviously the Odyssey cares
about the welfare of its divers, the Thorfinn does not. Did they encourage
predive cocktails as well?

Is this some kind of "my boat is better than yours" competition ? you need
to go back and play with your boat........grow up.
Greg Mossman...

Er . . . likewise. It takes two to tango, even in Britain where they
apparently have a lousy sense of humor nowadays. No wonder you can't find
Monty Python or Benny Hill reruns on TV anymore.
Besides, everyone knows the Odyssey is far superior to the Thorfinn.
There's simply no "competition".

It may well be, i dont know.....i have not been on board the Odyssey.
One speaks as one finds, i remember the diving as being very good, the
boat was ok, there were some things about the boat that were excellent,
other things that were not so......but nothing that sticks in my mind as
being bad or poor. You may well have enjoyed your time aboard Odyssey like
i did aboard Thorfinn......but its all about the diving really, and when
your in the water the boat is the last thing on one's mind.

Actually I had some issues with the Odyssey, but pretty minor ones. I
suppose the real issue is diving off the mother boat vs. diving from skiffs:
i.e., greater convenience vs. greater number of divers. On the bigger
wrecks, it didn't seem to matter how many divers were in the water, but
obviously smaller sites get more congested. That trip still ranks among the
best I've ever done, even though I almost died.

Meaning that you should not have any cause to worry about the
boat.....because you have done your research and picked the right boat to
start with............why do you worry about the boat when in the water ?

We do have a sense of humor over here.........but with the tax's we have
to put up with here it kinda grinds you down......so please excuse my lack
of (apparent) humor.

Here in the U.S., we can get an 4-month extension upon request, enabling us
to remain humored through the summer.
|
Take care Greg.......have a good day, and enjoy your diving.

You too. It's always better than working hard trying to pay the tax
collector.

old steam engine and its great pistons can be seen working. The crew were
good, the captain is Canadian (Lance) and Dan the divemaster is American,
the rest are locals, its kinda family run.........the food is ok, plain
and simple rather than haute cuisine.

What about the cabins? I understand they've made some improvements in
recent years, but when I was there in 1993, the accommodations were
rather rustic.
