Condition of reefs in Honduras?

I am a relatively new diver. I recently dove in Cozumel. After three
dives, I was told that the reef had actually been devastated by Hurricane
Katrina. Being a new diver, I guess I didn't know what I was missing.

Katrina didn't hit Cozumel, it hit New Orleans... It actually improved
the New Orleans diving in that there were now sunken cars, houses, and
everything else to look at... Wilma hit Cozumel... Yeah, the reefs
were a bit sandier than before, but it still was a better dive that a
lot of other places... We went there a month after the storm and there
was still extensive rebuilding going on, but the diving was
acceptable... Better than anything I can get here in Texas...

Now, I am planning a trip to Honduras. A few years back, it had a
reputation for being a prime dive destination. I know that it was struck by
a significant hurricane a few years ago, as well.

Can anyone tell me the current condition of the reefs there?

You will absolutely love it, especially as a new diver.

The reef is suffering some ecological problems, more than anything else.
And there's not a lot of fish, like you might see somewhere else, but each
dive is different from the one before. There's almost always still lots to
enjoy while doing your safety stop.

Roatan is where I really got into looking at little stuff and let me tell
you, while there may be a shortage of bigger stuff, there's no shortage of
little stuff. Fabulous that way. The majority of sites are a very brief
boat ride from shore.

Hmm, now having said all that I should ask you where you are planning on
staying. Are you going to be at a dedicated dive resort or in West End? Oh
wait, you didn't even say you were going to the Bay Islands, you said you
were going to Honduras. OK, so where are you going in Honduras and where do
you think you are going to stay?

Are there any recommendations for Honduran sites which are still in good
condition?
