PC Power
There are 700 million PC computers in the world. When I was a graduate student 20 years ago I had a project that involved using a Cray XMP supercomputer, the fastest number crucher on the planet. I was fortunate to be able to go to Germany to get a few hours CPU time on the only one in Europe at the time. Its speed was 400 MegaFlops and it had a 500 MegaByte RAM disk. How could I have imagined at the time that twenty years later I would have a PC at home with much more power and I would use it mostly for writing e-mails and looking at my holiday snaps? What will I be doing with technology in another 20 years? Who knows.
